Although not currently required by the Missouri Dental Board, as a best practice to ensure quality and consistency, the MDA requires licensed, MDA member dentists to train the clinical portions of the MDA EFDA courses. In addition to each course having a designated ‘Lead Trainer’, the MDA standard is one ‘Associate Trainer’ per four assistants at the clinical courses. Doctors must first become an Associate Trainer and go through the process outlined following, before becoming a Lead Trainer.
Download the MDA Trainer Toolkit to learn all about becoming a trainer.
Any licensed, MDA member dentist may become a trainer for expanded functions courses but must complete an official process to do so. Continuing education credits will be given for the trainer courses.

There are two steps to becoming a trainer:
- Attendance at a Trainer Workshop and participation in accompanying course calibration
- Attendance at an EFDA Course*
- Reviewing the same online didactic course the assistants complete (for the course you are training, such as Restorative); and,
- Completing a Trainer Workshop, which will serve to:
*If unable to attend must arrange mentoring from an existing trainer.
Trainer Workshop & Course Calibration
Dentists must complete Trainer Workshop and Course Calibration.
This consists of two parts:
Receive course calibration of Skills Standards for each of the expanded
functions skills you will be training for
Guide trainers in clinical instruction as they evaluate and coach assistants
Create optimal clinical course success, and ultimately, optimal success
as the new EFDA returns to practice their skills in the office

EFDA Course Attendance
In addition to the online coursework and attending an MDA ‘Train the Trainer’ workshop,
we ask dentists to attend an MDA-sponsored course prior to holding a course in their own practice. At the workshop and/or during a course, dentists will have the opportunity to network with other trainers and ask questions as you learn about:
- course structure and pace at which modules are taught
- responsibilities of the host trainer and what is expected of the associate trainers
- various techniques and applications needed to assist in the students’
comprehension and skills mastery
While this attendance is strongly encouraged as a best practice, we realize there may
be scenarios in which dentists desiring to become associate trainers cannot achieve this
in advance of when they would like to host a course or serve as an associate trainer at a course. In this instance, the MDA can assist in assigning one of the existing EFDA
Trainers to serve as a mentor to prepare the candidate in lieu of immediate attendance
at the course.
The MDA is striving to make available, through online learning, the Workshop, Calibration and sample Clinical Course.
Once you have completed the necessary steps to become an EFDA Associate Trainer, you are now ready to become a Lead Trainer and host a course in your office, if you wish.

we welcome your interest in hosting one or more courses in your office. MDA’s role is to make scheduling and holding a course in your office as easy as possible. We’ve created
a checklist which includes both the host’s and MDA’s role and responsibilities.
