The following expanded functions will be demonstrated in the online didactic course. At the clinical course, dentist trainers will teach these skills to the assistants, who then will be assessed and must show competency in order to receive the certificate of completion.
- Rubber Dam Placement (although not a function, the placement of the rubber dam is the precursor to the other restorative functions being taught
- Fit, Size and Cement Stainless Steel Crowns
- Place, Condense and Carve Amalgam for Class I, V, VI Restorations
- Place Composite for Class I, V, VI Restorations
- Place Sedative Filling

View Sample Module: Place Sedative Filling- The Placement of Restorative Materials course has a prerequisite anatomy and morphology exam that discusses tooth surfaces, general tooth morphology, anatomy of maxillary anteriors and posteriors, anatomy of mandibular anteriors and posteriors, the basic instrument grasp and finger rest, general principles of instrument use for restorative procedures and the restoration of cavity preparations with amalgam and composite resin.
- To ensure the validity of the examination process, the actual examinations will be conducted on-site prior to the start of the clinical skills instruction.
- Students will have 60 minutes at the beginning of the clinical to complete the 75-question exam, which must be passed at a score of 80% (60 of 75 questions answered correctly) in order to advance to the remaining portion of the hands-on clinical course.
- Your study guide is included with this packet, but can also be downloaded at www.moefda.org/anatmorph_study_restorative.pdf.
- Upon course registration, students will be sent three restorative preparations:
- If student mentoring by the employing/supervising dentist has not already started with the online didactic modules, we encourage the dentists to make preparations and oversee the placement, shaping and carving of amalgams and composites prior to EFDA candidates attending the clinical portion of the Restorative module.
- Although there are many ways to achieve quality restorations, please follow the online module demonstrations in performing placement of amalgams and composites.
- Preparations are different in the real world – and therefore vary in size and complexity of the anatomy to be reproduced.
One preparation may be used to perform placement of amalgams and composites.
These restorations may be drilled out after completion and the assistant may
practice multiple times with each prep.
Another prepartaion may be used to complete sedative filling procedures. This
tooth may also be drilled out after being completed and the assistant may
practice multiple times with each prep.
Another preparation (tooth #30) will be accompanied by a stainless steel crown
so that trimming and crimping of the crown may be performed as well as
cementation of the crown. If additional practice is required, the assistant may
use other crowns from their dental office.
- Upon course registration, students will be sent the Skills Standards to be passed at the clinical course in order to receive EFDA certification (also available in the PDF outlines that accompany the online modules).
- Students and their doctors are strongly encouraged to review and discuss these Skills Standards to correctly anticipate what must be successfully demonstrated for certification.
- These parameters of these standards to assess competency of students participating in the hands-on, clinical portion of the expanded functions course.
- Students must demonstrate minimal competency in these procedures to receive certificate of course completion, which enables delegation of expanded function procedures under direct supervision.
- Students will grade themselves and also their partner. This is done to encourage appropriate evaluating skills and techniques only. The Trainer grade is final determination of pass or fail.
