Prework completed through online modules

    • Self-review: Comprised of both PDF downloads and PowerPoint slides, with text, photos, illustrations and instructional videos to prepare you for the clinical portion)

    Online modules include:

    1. A separate Module for each of the expanded functions being taught
    2. PowerPoint slides, comprised of text, photos, illustrations and instructional videos
    3. Accompanying online practice quiz for each Module
    4. Outline and Skills Standards (PDF) of the online instruction

Clinical skills instruction

    • Dentist-taught: Comprised of hands-on demonstration and student performing skills to show minimal competency to receive certificate of expanded functions

    Clinical sessions include:
    1. Prerequisite Exam*

    2. Overview of instruments and materials

    3. Step-by-step instruction of each function, with coaching from lead/associate trainers

    4. Skills Assessment developed for each expanded function

  • Skills Standards are guidelines to assess the competency of students during the hands-on, clinical portion of the course. Students must demonstrate minimal competency in these procedures to receive certificate of course completion, which enables delegation of expanded function procedures under a dentist’s direct supervision.
*For Restorative, a Dental Anatomy and Morphology Exam; for Removable Prosthetics and Fixed Prosthetics, an Anatomic Landmarks Exam. Each Exam has a Study Guide provided. There is no prerequisite exam for Orthodontics

  • The curriculum has been developed and reviewed by a committee of practicing
MDA dentists, UMKC School of Dentistry faculty and dental assistant educators.
  • The curriculum and clinical provides the “basics” of the expanded functions procedures.
  • The Committee realizes your dentist may have preferences related to skills
discussed and demonstrated. For this reason it is important for assistants and supervising dentists to realize that the core of EFDA training will be in their offices after the assistant is certified through course completion.

The online modules for each EFDA course should provide the materials you need to help
you adequately prepare you for EFDA courses and to ensure your success in learning and honing these expanded function skills.

We strongly encourage you to talk to your dentist about the expanded functions course(s) you desire to take. We encourage you to review the course modules and the skills that are taught. Observe these procedures in practice and ask your dentist questions. As well,
review the Skills Standards for the course modules. These are the skills you will be
evaluated on in the EFDA clinical course. Discuss these skills with your doctor to ensure
you both feel confident about your readiness for the EFDA didactic and clinical.

In addition, an excellent learning package is Modern Dental Assisting which includes the textbook, website, a multimedia procedures DVD with video clips and animations, and an interactive dental office CD that includes updated case studies and interactive review exercises.

Note!  The Suggested Registration Deadline provides the recommended full six weeks to study the online coursework. While assistants may register at any time up to two weeks prior to the clinical session date, a later registration date will lessen the study period. There are two portions of the course which must be completed: Didactic and Clinical. The didactic (study) portion will be presented in an online format and must be completed prior to the clinical date. For Restorative and Removable Prosthetics only, a prerequisite anatomy and/or morphology exam must be taken and passed before continuing; a review is provided.  The clinical (hands-on) portion will include instruction of each function (with coaching from dentist trainers) and assessment of skill mastery.

  • You may login to the online course as many (or few) times as necessary
  • There is no standard or requirement for number of times the course (and instructional videos) is viewed or accessed
  • There is no standard for the length of time students will need to feel proficient in their preparedness for the clinical course
  • You must review the materials in the online modules accordingly and then determine, independently, readiness for the clinical course (and continue study if needed)

Through the grant, course rebates are available to assistants who work in the MFH service
area
and who successfully pass EFDA courses. The course discounts will be awarded as a reimbursement for course fees once the student has attained their certificate of competency.
